Since 1981, Akabu Queens have held their place as the UK’s formidable all-female reggae outfit. What began as 'African Woman', a drum, bass and rhythm section founded by Diane White and sisters Shelomi and Paulette Coke, grew into a musical force that’s played across continents and carved their own space in reggae history.

They made headlines as the first all-female band to perform at Reggae Sunsplash in Jamaica, setting a precedent and laying down grooves to an awestruck audience. The line-up evolved, the name changed, but the heart of the sound remained - heavy bass, roots rhythm and that London-grown edge.

Their album “Warrior Queen” landed on the influential On-U Sound label, cementing their place among reggae’s innovators. Over the years, Akabu Queens have shared stages with the likes of Burning Spear, Gregory Isaacs, Lee “Scratch” Perry and Aswad, while holding their own at major festivals from JapanSplash to Boomtown, Rototom in Valencia, Rebel Salute and CitySplash.

Each member is steeped in the craft - not just performers, but producers, educators and respected figures across the international reggae community. Their recent single “Murderation” brings their message into sharp focus, tackling youth violence with a sound as rich and unflinching as ever.

Their legacy speaks for itself. The music does the rest.
