Discover the corner of London where royal, military and botanical history sit side by side! On this relaxed 90-minute walk from Sloane Square to the Chelsea Physic Garden, freelance journalist and qualified London Blue Badge Tourist Guide Emily Laurence Baker brings the Chelsea Heritage Quarter to life. The walk connects the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the National Army Museum and the Chelsea Physic Garden, and unfolds three centuries of stories that tie them together.
Stand before Sir Christopher Wren's Royal Hospital, home to the scarlet-coated Chelsea Pensioners for over 300 years, and step into the Soane Stable Yard, which is free to enter seven days a week. Hear how fashionable Georgian London flocked to the pleasure gardens at Ranelagh. Learn how a Second World War bomb destroyed the Hospital's infirmary and cleared the ground where the National Army Museum now stands, a story that still ties the two institutions together. At the Chelsea Physic Garden, founded by the apothecaries in 1673, you'll hear how a walled riverside garden shaped medicine across the world.
Along the way Emily shares illustrations of the interiors, gardens and lost pleasure grounds you can't see from the street. It's the perfect taster of everything the Chelsea Heritage Quarter has to offer, and of the sites you can return to explore in depth.
