James Hunter stated his career in the Howlin’ Wilf and the Vee-Jays group in 1986.

In the early 1990’s, Van Morrison recruited Hunter to sing backup on the road touring and on two albums, A Night in San Francisco and Days Like This. In the years to follow, James Hunter opened shows for Aretha Franklin, Etta James,
Willie Nelson, and Tom Petty.

In 2013, James Hunter signed to NYC's Daptone Records and changed the name of the group to The James Hunter Six. The debut Daptone release 'Minute By Minute' (2013) has been followed by
'Hold On!' (2016), 'Whatever It Takes' (2018), 'Nick of Time' (2020) and 'With Love' (2022).
