Luther Vandross could make a love song feel effortless, but nothing about the singing was casual. The phrasing, the glide, the way he sat inside an arrangement rather than on top of it, that is what made his records so rich. FiL Straughan comes to this songbook with the right kind of respect: not trying to over-sing Luther, but letting the melodies breathe.

Backed by a live band, FiL performs the songs that made Vandross one of soul's great vocal stylists, including "Never Too Much", "Give Me the Reason" and "Stop to Love". These are records built on polish and feeling in equal measure, from the bright rush of the dancefloor numbers to the ballads that ask for real control.

The evening also reaches into the wider world of classic soul, with selected songs by Al Green and Marvin Gaye, placing Luther where he belongs: in a lineage of singers who understood romance, groove and emotional detail without needing to force the point.

A London-based soul singer with international performance experience, FiL has appeared with Hot Chocolate and Ray Lewis's Drifters, and his own music has featured on BBC 1Xtra. He brings warmth, ease and genuine affection to the material, supported by musicians who know how to keep the pocket smooth and the songs moving.
