Venue Information

Located in the heart of London's West End, His Majesty's Theatre is one of the city's most historic and visually stunning theatres. The current building, now the fourth to stand on this site, was opened in 1897 and designed by renowned architect Charles J. Phipps in a magnificent French Renaissance style. With a richly decorated auditorium, tiered balconies, and an iconic domed ceiling, it remains a must-visit for fans of live theatre in London. The theatre is Grade II listed and features one of the West End's first flat stages, plus pioneering under-stage machinery that was ahead of its time.

Throughout its long history, the theatre has hosted a wide range of events, from early London opera performances to blockbuster musicals. It was once home to Handel and Mozart operas and later became famous for shows like Chu Chin Chow, Brigadoon, West Side Story, and Fiddler on the Roof. Since 1986, it has been the home of Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary The Phantom of the Opera, one of the longest-running musicals in West End history. Did you know that the show's iconic chandelier weighs over one tonne and is famously dropped - safely! - above the audience every night.

The theatre also has its share of backstage stories. In 1984, legendary comedian Tommy Cooper tragically passed away on stage during a live TV broadcast of Live From Her Majesty's, with millions of viewers watching at home, initially thinking it was part of the act. The theatre's name has changed with the monarch throughout history, most recently reverting to His Majesty's in 2023, following the coronation of King Charles III.
